Small Business Rising coalition partners are calling on the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to withdraw its latest misguided proposal overhauling the small business size standards. It’s a give away for big business. The rule would expand the definition of "small business" so far that firms with $1 billion in annual revenue, banks with $5 billion in assets, and companies with thousands of employees could qualify. By the SBA's own estimate, more than 114,000 additional firms would be reclassified as small.
SBA programs direct hundreds of billions of dollars each year in contract set-asides, loan guarantees, and other support to help small businesses compete in increasingly concentrated markets. Letting mid-sized and large firms claim small business status would crowd out the independent businesses these programs were built for.
We’re urging the SBA to narrow the definition, not expand it. If you’re a small business owner, your voice matters!
